  • I wish the flowers would stop having sex. When I coughed this morning, it felt like somebody shot me in the face. I had to look for Joey to make sure that she wasn't wielding a shotgun, then I had to look in the mirror to confirm that I was still intact.
  • Also I can't breathe through my nose at all.
  • Work is still busy.
  • The lawnmower is just barely working, very sputtery &c. I will have to take the carburetor apart again, but this time actually replace that torn gasket instead of just jiggling it around a little bit.
  • So now I have to figure out how to get a replacement gasket. I've never had so much trouble looking through any kind of parts catalog.
  • I haven't heard the dehumidifier in a few days. I'm guessing the compressor finally gave out. And just after I fixed the fan with superglue!
  • I will make a whirlwind trip to Holland on Sunday to visit mother.
  • So I feel overwhelmed.
  • halp.

Well, Joey may not have the shotgun, but the conspiracy plot is still going on. Have fun in West Michigan! I haven't been back in ages. You know you like putzing around with broken stuff and finding what you can use super glue on and such. You won't get as much enjoyment out of a new one. But, I hope you find the parts that you need so at least your allergies can be relieved with the dehumidifier.

Thanks Mr. Rocky.

I enjoy it if I can take my time with it, but...the basement is super wet and the grass is super long. So bleh.

Mothers Day is, I believe, yet ANOTHER "important holiday" invented by a company that sold greeting cards. Like Valentine's Day. So let's see, Easter is about a rising from the dead (uh huh) by buying candy, Xmas celebrates the birth of Jesus even tho he was reportedly born in the summer months by buying expensive presents, Thanksgiving is about Pilgrims sitting down to eat dinner with Indians a few years before the settlers waged war on them and took away their land by stuffing ourselves with fat. Nice customs in this nation.

At least the other holidays have less pretense.

So who cares who invented it? Is there something wrong with setting aside one day to take a moment to celebrate mothers? Every one leads such busy lives, setting these days aside are an important pause for us to remember things that are important. If someone feels the need to buy a microwave oven, or a DVR for their mom, that is their issue. Making a nice supper, or helping her weed her garden are acceptable alternatives, as long as you show that you care.

I have no issue with "made up" holidays as long as they add-value.

Agreed, nice days can result that may not have. My problem is how holidays are marketed and sold, at their foundations, on lies.

How you choose to celebrate is entirely up to you. If you feel the need to buy a Hallmark Brand Card and go to Applebees then fine. If you go and brew a big old pot of tea and ask your mom about what it was like for her growing up, thats also cool. You can't blame the holiday for how people choose to celebrate it.

has nothing to do with blaming. you're talking about an entirely separate issue, because i might even agree with you on your subject, holidays can be enjoyed in various ways (or not).

my subject, not what you're addressing, is obvious, i've stated it twice now. if your point is that the lies holidays are based on are moot, we disagree on that.

have a sweet mothers day in any case, baby :-)

I just don't think something is inherently evil because it was designed with profit in mind.

If that's how you feel, we might as well shut down all the pharmaceuticals right now, so they don't try and profit off any future cures for the good of mankind.

To be fair, a lot of the pharmaceuticals that have a huge benefit to society (penicillin for example, or the polio vaccine) were not developed with profit as a motive, they were developed by academics in academic settings.

A lot of the medications that truly were developed for profit (sayyyyyyy...viagra?) are sort of bullshit that we could do without anyway.

And maybe the Executive at Hallmark really loved his mom and saw an opportunity to celebrate her? We have no way of knowing. Why paint Mothers Day as evil if its original intent is one that is pure and honest and filled with love.. :P

bullshit that we could do without anyway
Seriously.. if you're over 40 and can't get a boner, thats your problem! Sexual activity isnt that important to humans, they should read a book or something instead!

Well, sexual activity may be important to humans (as a whole), but I would argue that the sexual activity of gentlemen that can't get a bonar without taking pills is not.

Indeed, Marky. I'm not too big on the Hallmark Holidays, and Mom isn't either. But even if Mom knows that the holiday is bullshit, she'd still end up watching her sister being doted on by her children, so she'd still feel bad if I ignored it. Therein lies the particular emotional terrorism of these "holidays" :-D

I betcha miss the golden oldie days when all a respectable housewife had to do was wear a spotless apron and perfect the self-administered back alley abortion (for those times when the milkman just wouldn't pull out!)
