Ok, so. Everybody is all "yay, a crack in the façade!" - I, however, still am not counting my eggs. If I had to bet one way or the other, I'd bet that Rove has a pretty big ace up his sleeve. Consider this -

1) Rove gave Cooper the ok to name him, even though Cooper was fully prepared to keep his mouth shut and go to jail. Why would Rove have done this if he didn't know he could beat it?

2) The mainstream media is all over this. If this were a real Bush Administration scandal, they'd be ignoring it, wouldn't they?

I'd love to be convinced that I'm wrong.

1) I wondered about that myself. If Rove really did leak the name, why would he give Cooper permission to name him as the source? Unless he's so arrogant he thought he could get away with it. Actually, history is proving that this administration can get away with ANYTHING.

2) The mainstream media seems to have located their spines when it comes to this story. I'm not sure why, but maybe they're finally responding to everyone calling them bootlicking corporate toadies with no journalistic integrity.

I have this joyous mental image of Rove being frog-marched out of the White House in chains, but I'm sure that even if he is charged we won't get THAT kind of photo op.

1) Yeah, I can see that. He'd be all like "yeah, I did it! What you gonna do about it now, suckas? LICK MY NUTS!!!"

2) I'm wary of this. Why now?

The DOJ forced everyone in the administration to sign waivers freeing the reporters of any confidentiality agreement a long time ago. Cooper said he didn't accept that piece of paper.

Time released the reporters notes which indicated Rove was a source pretty much flew in the face of repeated denials by the White House left them with no option. Cooper *then* is said to have received what he called a valid waiver from Rove. So pretty much key here was Time giving up the notes.

I think Rove sucks Bush's essence at night, imbuing Georgette with life for yet another night.

Rove has an ace up his sleeve, and I'm worried!

He seems a bit smug...

Never show your opponents that you are fearful, it is like a guilty face, blood in the water :-)

Oh, I understand as much--

However, it seems he's got a penchant for taunting people.

And, with his position, he's basically infallible. Especially in a second-term. Court action, if any, would take years, and, as he's played his cards, everything else about him is circumstantial, so he's good as gold.

It's just a good way to make me and others pissy!

Dems and others need to get awy from the court stuff and focus on the appearance of wrongdoing or abuse of power. Dirty tricks, poor form for a leader. The deception. Just fry him in public opinion get him to answer to the American people and forget the court shit, he woudl get a pardon frm Bush anyway.

Oh, very true.

But the dems feel empowered by the courts... and yet, they should know by now that they're about to get scuttled by an increasingly conservative court system

The advantage is now, not in the future. They need to stop getting tied up in procedure and go for the nuts.

I'm not sure it's that easy for them... they have a hard time lately not playing the victim card.

#1. Cooper had a waiver a long time ago presented by the DOJ from every WH staff member. That waiver legally freed him of any confidentiality agreement he may have. Cooper didn't accept it.

It was Time releasing the notes that exposed Rove somewhat. Which mildly flew in the face of the denials the WH had long been touting that Rove had NOTHING whatsoever to do with this story.

What it appears to be at this point is they couldn't lie any longer since Time exposed Rove indeed talked to this reported on this exact issue, it was time to parse words and split hairs. They fully expect the left to tromp on them and the right to call it partisan bashing.

#2. Don't forget the media is pissed that a reporter is in jail! Real or not...they are not happy. So if there was an old game, this is a new game.
