"Benedict Rove"

Ok, so. Everybody is all "yay, a crack in the façade!" - I, however, still am not counting my eggs. If I had to bet one way or the other, I'd bet that Rove has a pretty big ace up his sleeve. Consider this -
1) Rove gave Cooper the ok to name him, even though Cooper was fully prepared to keep his mouth shut and go to jail. Why would Rove have done this if he didn't know he could beat it?
2) The mainstream media is all over this. If this were a real Bush Administration scandal, they'd be ignoring it, wouldn't they?
I'd love to be convinced that I'm wrong.

Date: 2005-07-13 03:17 pm (UTC)2) The mainstream media seems to have located their spines when it comes to this story. I'm not sure why, but maybe they're finally responding to everyone calling them bootlicking corporate toadies with no journalistic integrity.
I have this joyous mental image of Rove being frog-marched out of the White House in chains, but I'm sure that even if he is charged we won't get THAT kind of photo op.

Date: 2005-07-13 06:47 pm (UTC)Time released the reporters notes which indicated Rove was a source pretty much flew in the face of repeated denials by the White House left them with no option. Cooper *then* is said to have received what he called a valid waiver from Rove. So pretty much key here was Time giving up the notes.

Date: 2005-07-13 05:11 pm (UTC)However, it seems he's got a penchant for taunting people.
And, with his position, he's basically infallible. Especially in a second-term. Court action, if any, would take years, and, as he's played his cards, everything else about him is circumstantial, so he's good as gold.
It's just a good way to make me and others pissy!

Date: 2005-07-13 06:57 pm (UTC)It was Time releasing the notes that exposed Rove somewhat. Which mildly flew in the face of the denials the WH had long been touting that Rove had NOTHING whatsoever to do with this story.
What it appears to be at this point is they couldn't lie any longer since Time exposed Rove indeed talked to this reported on this exact issue, it was time to parse words and split hairs. They fully expect the left to tromp on them and the right to call it partisan bashing.
#2. Don't forget the media is pissed that a reporter is in jail! Real or not...they are not happy. So if there was an old game, this is a new game.
