Today's Soapbox Rant™ is brought to you by the letter F and the letter U.
The American Family Association. In this instance, "Family" means "hate", or "kicking people while they are down", or perhaps "we hate the gays right now, but once they are all gone, who knows who we will go after, perhaps women? muslims? jews? blacks?".
Anyway. I do have some (albeit indirect) personal experience with these fucks.
My Mom was a county commissioner for years and years. When she refused to acquiesce to their stupid hateful demands, they organized a campaign against her. Like, her personally. She received all manner of hate mail and threatening phone calls. She feared for her safety. She also feared for her day job, which was fundraising for the community health organization (a non-profit hospital, several clinics, etc.) As you can imagine, the people that she was soliciting money from were by-and-large sympathetic to the AFA. You know how those damn rich people are. At least in West Michigan.
She has since resigned from county commission. She is not a weak person by any means, but this is not how she wants to spend her life. She did end up losing her day job as well, but that is mostly unrelated. Mostly.
So yeah. They won.
Anyway, these are the bastards that just gave up on their boycott of Disney, as well as their very short-lived (and fucking stupid) boycott of Ford.
Now, they are aiming their stupid guns at the AFL-CIO, because they bargain for domestic partnership benefits.
So far, the AFL-CIO has stood strong, if only because it's the economically intelligent thing to do. But who knows. So I sent them a little e-mail -
I live in a working-class Detroit-area neighborhood, so many of my neighbors are members of your organization. I've always seen the benefits of unions, but recently a particular benefit has come to light - AFL-CIO's insistence on protecting the rights of its LGBT members.
In the face of the AFA's attack on you (as well as any other organization that recognizes the right of LGBT individuals merely to exist, if not to pursue happiness), I just want to send a little thank-you for standing up against these hate- and fear-based organizations.
So...thank you!
BobIf you want to do the same, you can do so
here.
Irritated smooches!
